SLAVF's New Commandant, Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya Takes over Duties

In the midst of military formalities and religious observances, the 43rd Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya assumed duties on Monday (10) at the SLAVF Headquarters premises in Kosgama, Seethawaka.

Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya on his arrival at the SLAVF HQ premises was saluted in the customary Guard Turnout by Sri Lanka Artillery troops after he was received by Brigadier Kithsiri Liyanage, Principal Staff Officer at the SLAVF.

After receipt of honours, Major General Kelum Nugegoda, Deputy Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force welcomed the incoming Commandant and invited him to review the Guard of Honour, present in his honour at the 'Rendezvous' ground. He afterwards in the company of the parade commander received the salute in accordance with military traditions.

After a few minutes, he left his signature symbolically for a formal document in his new office and signified the acceptance of the new appointment while members of the Maha Sangha went on chanting 'Seth Pirith' to bless his office.

Then followed his formal first address to the SLAVF troops, in which he highlighted the significance of preserving the dignity of the organization to be in line with the Army Commander's expectations and wishes since the SLAVF as a strong unit caters to the needs of the country.

The new Commandant also paid due respect to the memory of fallen SLAVF War Heroes and was invited to plant a sapling in the premises as a symbol of memory. Towards the end of the day's proceedings, All Ranks joined a tea and extended best wishes and congratulations to the new SLAVF Commandant.
