Sinha Regiment Troops Escort Iconic ‘Nedungamuwe Raja’ to Kandy

Showing the highest degree of care and affection, troops of 2 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and 8 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) took turns and provided escort security to the iconic Nadungamuwe Raja tusker during its seven-day long march up to the Temple of Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy on Monday (20) from Nedungamuwa, its permanent abode.

Troops on its arrival at the sacred premises formally handed it over to the Secretary of the Temple, Mr Jayampathi Weddagala. This tusker, now treasured by many as a national asset is scheduled to carry the Buddha’s relics for the 12th consecutive year during the historic Esala pageant season in Kandy.

Arrangements to this effect were put in place by Major General Rukmal Dias, Commander, Security Forces - Central (SF-Cen) on the directions of the Commander of the Army who took a personal interest in the project as an animal-lover. The organizing committee of the Kandy Dalada Perahera expressed their gratitude to the Army for its concerned security escort provided to the tusker all along the road. The same protection is to be provided during its return journey, back home to Nedungamuwa after the festival. Buy Kicks | Nike
