SFHQ-West Troops Rise to Emergency in School Premises

Troops of Gemunu Watch (GW) of the 583 Brigade under the 58 Division of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) on Saturday (9) offered their timely assistance and put up a protective sandbag bund against possible mudslides from hills surrounding Ratnapura Sumana Balika Vidyalaya premises.

Torrential rains and continuing inclement weather patterns, accompanied by gushing waters made hills around this school, faced with the threat of causing mudslides and risks to the lives of students and storied school buildings in the premises.

After risks and dangers, involved in the developing situations were brought to the notice of the nearest Army camp by the principal, Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces – West instructed the 583 Brigade troops of the 58 Division to immediately attend to the need, considering the gravity of the dangers, posed to the southern bank of the school.

21 Army personnel of the 8 GW carried heavy stones, equipment and sand from the area and stacked them accordingly around affected areas within hours, resisting any further erosion as heavy rainfalls continued in the area.
