SFHQ-KLN Troops Assist Cleaning & Restoration of Irrigation Canals

Troops of the 65 Division under the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi, together with farming community in Thunukkai area recently initiated a project to clean water canals loading to Thenniyankulam tank, running through paddy-fields in the area.

History of this rural tank runs to the ancient King I Gajaba era during which the whole Thenniyankulam prospered in paddy cultivation. More than 200 families use this tank for their amenities and farming purposes. The Thenniyankulam tank when it is filled to full capacity is now able to irrigate 700 acres more. One of its major canals is running along nearly 6.5 km while another canal is running along a distance of 5.5 km.

At the initiative of Major General Sarath Weerawardena, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division, around 1000 troops of the 65 Division of the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi actively carried out the Shramadana campaign, together with more than 200 civilians.

It was also a measure to further promote the understand and communal harmony between civilians and military in the area.

Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander, Security Forces- Kilinochchi also participated on the occasion as a special invitee to evaluate the progress.
