SFHQ-J to Educate Resettled Civilians on Mine Risks

Newly resettled civilians in the Jaffna peninsula were recently enlightened on risks involved in landmines and other explosive devices as part of the ongoing Civil-Military Co-operation in Jaffna, although those areas remain completely de-mined.

Nagarkovil area, one of the LTTE’s highly mined areas in the past during the battles for supremacy was selected as the pilot venue for this project, spearheaded by Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on the instructions of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinhge, Commander, SFHQ-J.

Almost all villagers in Nagarkovil area attended this workshop on mine risks organized by the troops of the 521 Brigade in Point Pedro area. Visuals and multi media presentations displayed nature of those explosives, booby traps, mines, etc to those who were present at the occasion.

De-miners serving 10 Sri Lanka Engineers assisted in the successful conduct of this workshop. More workshops on the same theme are to be held in every newly resettled area in the near future.
