Secretary Defence Joins 'Ifthar' Ceremony with MoD Officials

A traditional 'Ifthar' ceremony, organized by Ministry of Defence and Urban Development took place at Hotel Taj Samudra Wednesday (23) evening with the participation of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development as the Chief Guest.
 
The ceremony, attended by a host of distinguished invitees, including Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, service commanders, Additional Secretary to Ministry of Defence, Mr S. Hettiarachchi, Major General (retd) H.K.G Hendawitharana, Major General (retd) Palitha Fernando and several MoD officials, is held every year by the Ministry of Defence as a symbol of understanding and respect for Islamic traditions.   
 
Muslims around the world practise the fast during this holy month. 'Ifthar', more popularly called the breaking of the fast during the month of Ramadan.
 
During Wednesday (23) evening’s event, Rev. Moulavi Fazil Farook conducted special prayers and a sermon, invoking blessings on the Nation, followed by 'Magrib' prayers.
 
The fast ends with the 'Eid ul-Fitr', the Ramadan festival with the sighting of the new moon that will signify the beginning of the new month in the lunar calendar.
