Sappers in Marathon Make Impressive Gains & Sweep the Board in 'Youth Marathon'

Sappers of the Corps of Engineers of Sri Lanka Army swept the board in the annual ‘Youth Marathon Championship - 2015’ 42 km run,  organized by the National Youth Council (NYC) on Sunday (14) securing all first five places in sequence to carry away the Championship trophy.

A few more than 55 long-distance runners and sprinters under 28, representing Tri services, Schools, Sports Clubs and different organizations, took part in the marathon that kicked off from Maharagama and reached Meepe and returned to Maharagama along the same road. Lance Corporal D.G.D Sandaruwan secured the first place clocking 2 hours, 36 minutes and 51 seconds. Sapper S. D. I. L Pallewela completed the event in 2 hours 40 minutes and 12 seconds to receive the 2nd place in the marathon.

Sapper W. D.P. S Niroshan, giving a shocking challenge claimed the 3rd place by timing 2 hours 47 minutes and 7 seconds, followed by Sapper W. M. D Priyantha who timed his finish at 2 hours, 49 minutes and 4 seconds (4th place), and Sapper K. Nawarathne by finishing the marathon at 2 hours, 53 minutes and 6 seconds to be elevated to the 5th place.

Commander of the Army extended his greetings to them and pledged further support to them in the future. Commandant, Director Sports, senior officers and fellow-workmates congratulated all the five winners who carried away the Championship. NYC Chairman and a large gathering of officials were present there to watch the event. The trophies and merit awards were also distributed soon after the completion.
