RSP Conferred on One More Segment of SLLI War Heroes


Conferment of ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’ (RSP) Medals on one more segment of 557 War Heroes of Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), got under way on Thursday (5) at the Youth Services Council auditorium, Maharagama with Major General W.D.L.P Wickremasinghe, Deputy Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) gracing as the Chief Guest.

The colourful ceremony at first honoured the fallen War Heroes whose next of kin on behalf of their beloved ones, were called upon to receive the RSP medal after citations, attributed to, were read out.

The ceremony was attended by many other senior SLLI officers, including Brigadier Sarath Embawa, Brigadier S.K.G.N.B Ehelamalpe, Brigadier Mahinda Mudalige, Brigadier Sudath Perera, Brigadier Jayantha Gunarathne, Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera, Brigadier Mangala Wijesundara and several senior officers who joined in awarding the medals afterwards. 

Those War Heroes fearlessly fought against terrorism during Humanitarian Operations and actively contributed to the defence of the country before May 2009. Earlier, 1257 SLLI War Heroes were awarded the medal several months ago.

The day’s event began with the recital of the SLLI song, followed by one-minute silence in honour of the fallen and a video presentation that displays the eventful proud SLLI history which has a life-span of 133 years.

Major General Wickremasinghe, the Chief Guest in his brief talk to the occasion saluted the memory of fallen SLLI War Heroes and extolled the commitment and invaluable dedication of all Medal recipients at the expense of their lives on behalf of their country. 

With the sounding of the bugler, recalling and respecting the memory of fallen War Heroes and recital of the National Anthem, the day’s ceremony came to culmination.
