With Renewed Glimmers of New Hopes Curtains Come Down on 'Army Para Games - 2013'

Unswerving moral courage and insatiable aptitude for multiple athletic skills of some 845 differently able Army War Heroes of our times who showcased their talents in the 16th “Sri Lanka Army Para Games – 2013”, reached a climax on Thursday (26) evening when selected athletes in the 4-month long tournament, vied for supremacy, amid huge enthusiasm and excitement at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The three-day long (Sept 24-26) tournament of the Army ‘Para Sports Committee’ formally commenced earlier in June 2013 with wheelchair Basket Ball competitions and later on followed events in Badminton, Cycling, Wheelchair Marathon, Archery, Weight-Lifting, Volleyball, Volleyball (sitting), Beach Volleyball, Table Tennis, Cricket, Swimming, Wheelchair Tennis, Air Rifle Shooting and Athletics, etc.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest, together with his spouse, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch, graced the closing ceremony at the invitation of Major General Jagath Dias, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army ‘Para Sports Committee’ who welcomed the Chief Guest.

A differently able War Hero, adding sentimental value to the occasion symbolically pinned a Para Games badge on the Chief Guest as he entered the premises to witness their athletic talents.

Prior to the inaugural ceremony on Tuesday (24), these Para Games were separately taking place in different Army Regimental Headquarters and grounds on a staggered basis nearly for about 4 months before today’s final encounter and the closing ceremony.

Its ceremonial evening undoubtedly instilled a new glimmer of hope among more than 845 differently able War Heroes who displayed their unbeatable sport skills in the past three days to receive accolades.

The tournament that covered 21 track and field events came to a climax with athletic and relay events, taking the centre-stage in the past three days. The Gajaba Regiment team as they excelled in the year 2012, emerged overall champions in all track and field events amid reverberating cheers which dominated the stadium continuously for a couple of minutes.
 
The colourful band displays, presented by Army bands at the occasion, rent the air with soothing melodies as all 845 plus participants lined up for the much-awaited prize awarding ceremony.

It was the time for eagerly accolades. Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, together with the Chairman, ‘Para Sports Committee’, congratulated each winner separately and gave away awards to them, as the final phase of the event was drawing nearer.

Major General Jagath Dias, Chairman, ‘Para Sports Committee’, proposed the vote of thanks and praised the War Heroes for their excellent contribution to the success of the event.

Previously known as the ‘Army Disable Sports Meet’, saw its birth in the year 1991, but was renamed in 2010 to be called the ‘Sri Lanka Army Para Games.
