MOD DENIES ANY INVOLVEMENT OF SECURITY FORCES IN PILLUMALAI ATTACK

An LTTE camp in the general un-cleared area of PILLUMALAI, about 35 km southwest of BATTICALOA had allegedly come under attack believed to be from a breakaway group of the LTTE on 07 September 2004 around 10.30 p.m.

At least eight LTTE cadres, believed to be from LTTE Wanni faction had been killed and one LTTE cadre had reportedly received injuries in the attack, according to some pro-LTTE media and website reports. Some of those reports claimed that Sri Lanka Army commandos were responsible for the attack.

Troops of the Special Task Force and the Police personnel on duty in the closest proximity to the place of the incident (about 2 km west of PULLUMALAI) in cleared areas deny any involvement whatsoever in this attack and further confirm that no service personnel have had any involvement as alleged by the above media reports. This is totally an internal matter of the LTTE.

The Sri Lanka Army further informs that there is no deployment of the Security Forces found in the area where the incident in question occurred.
