President Opens New Building Complex at Defence Services College

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday (26), joining the 5th Anniversary celebrations of Sri Lanka’s one and only Defence Services College (DSC) for children of War Heroes during a brief ceremony, gifted one more new five-storeyed building to its  students for further expansion of their studies.

The DSC, founded in 2007 for the benefit of children of tri-service and Police families, on a concept mooted by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, was initiated as a solution to the pestering problem of finding schools to their off-springs while they were being engaged in offensives against LTTE terrorism during humanitarian operations. The College so far offered classes only from Grade 1 – 6.

Today’s opening of the new five-storeyed building complex, including a well-equipped laboratory and an IT section by the Chief Guest, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in the company of President’s Secretary Mr Lalith Weerathunge, Minister of Education Mr Bandula Gunawardane, Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-service Commanders, Inspector General of Police, Director General Civil Defence Force and many other distinguished guests, facilitates the conduct of classes from Grade 6 – 12 at the DSC, now onwards.

At the auspicious 10.31 a.m, amidst Seth Pirith chanted by members of the Maha Sangha, President Rajapaksa cut a ribbon and warmed the new building after lighting the traditional oil lamp. A special plaque, unveiled at the same occasion, narrated the history behind opening of this new complex, erected in conformity with colonial architecture of the existing ones.

President Rajapaksa afterwards symbolized the onset of the 2012 - enrolment by admitting four children to the college, representing Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police before he was invited to take a closer look at all other sections and open the data inventory at the DSC.

Later on, the President inducted the temporary FM Radio channel of the DSC and viewed the educational exhibition, organized by the students. Before the President’s exit from the premises, he sat for a group photo along with students, DSC Director, Brigadier J Pakshaweera and the DSC principal, Mr Pramuditha Wickramasinghe.

The DSC, affiliated to the Ministry of Education, is manned by teachers of the Department of Education and has all the facilities for sports, swimming, medical needs, dental requirements and a well-equipped library.

To its credit, the DSC has two bands; western and oriental and those in the two bands have excelled well during different competitions.
