President Opens National Vesak Zone in Colombo

BUDDHARASHMI National Vesak Zone-2010, organized by the Presidential Secretariat and Gangaramaya together was declared open by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksha lighting a traditional oil lamp in Gangaramaya premises on the invitation of Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thero the Chief Incumbent of Gangaramaya after religious observances.

Speaking on the occasion the President said that this Vesak zone inaugurated during the period of terror in the country but it is happy to celebrate Vesak this time in a liberated country free from terrorism after 30 years and he wished this Vesak celebrations would help to heal the shattered hearts.  

The Vesak Zone organized around Gangaramaya Temple premises, Temple Trees and in the island in Bere Lake decorated with thousands of coloured electric bulbs contain hundred of Vesak Lanterns, Vesak Pandals and recital of devotional songs.

Ministers, Members of Parliament, State Officials including the President Secretary, Army Commander and Senior Officers from Army, Navy and Air Force attended the function. Thousands of people belonging to all ethnicities and religions visited the Vesak Zone. It will continue for seven days from today.
