Precautionary Measures in Pahiyangala Closely Supervised

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crisanthe De Silva, intending to take stock of prevailing climatic conditions, emerging threat levels in surrounding mountains after warnings and precautionary measures, turned up unannounced at Pahiyangala area in Kukuleganga Friday (02) morning, together with Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Forces – West (SF-West) and Officer-in-charge of overall Rescue and Relief Operations.

Landslides and floods in Pahiyangala, one of the worst-affected remote mountainous areas in the Kalutara District, claimed scores of lives and destroyed many houses in the past one week after torrential rains.

In the wake of new warnings and information on Pahiyangala and surroundings, announced by respective authorities, the Commander of the Army swiftly visited this area and closely evaluated the developments in consultation with several other officials of the state agencies on hand.

He also instructed accompanying Senior Officers to be alert to meteorological and geological predictions and necessary emergency measures in case of any eventuality. He took time off to speak to a section of the victims at a temporary operations centre and learnt more about the issues that they are facing at the moment.

Before his exit from the location, the Commander of the Army called at the nearby temple where a section of displaced civilians are living. He also shared a couple of views with the inmates.
