A host of environment friendly students, private donors and popular artists including the Faculty of Agricultural Science in the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Principal, teachers and members of the Old Boys' Association at Naththandiya Dhammissara College, Associated Motorways Company, Youth of Hope Environment Organisation, Mr Saranga Disasekara, Ms Shanudi Priyasadh and Mrs Dulika Marapana, impressed with the Army's ongoing Wilpattu reforestation programme at Wilpattu National Park under the ‘Thuruliya Wenuwen Api’ project, conceptualized by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, joined hands with one more phase of sapling planting on Saturday (15).
This phase, organized on the directions of Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni who has been entrusted with the overall responsibility of the project saw over 8000 Kumbuk saplings and 500 other valuable plants were planted on that day with the participation of above stakeholders. They were planted inside conserved areas of Wilpattu National Park, Villaththaikulam and Veppal forest areas. In addition, those environmentalists provided 100 cement bags, 600 feet of PVC pipes, 10 water barrels and Rs. 50,000.00 in cash to be used for the project as planned by the Army.
Under the reforestation in Wilpattu National Park and its adjoining conserved forest areas, the Commander Security Force Headquarters Wanni has planned to plant 45,000 trees within a few weeks. Currently, 21 acres of land have been covered after planting new saplings.
