Part of Troops Held Land Released To Jaffna Owners

In consistent with the government policy of releasing northern lands, hitherto used by the Security Forces to their original owners, the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on the instructions of the Secretary Defence and the Commander of the Army released a 2 sq km area of land around the Palaly camp to their original owners on Tuesday (29).

Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, SFHQ – J prioritizing the requirement took steps to de-mine the earmarked areas under J/283 Idaikkadu Grama Seva Division and a part of J/284 Valalai Grama Seva Division before the SFHQ – J vested the land in the owners during a special religious ceremony at Idaikkadu Pillayar Kovil premises, which also remained unused.

The move saw transfer of documents at the Kovil premises. 1085 members of 326 families are benefited by the release of the area for public use.

Troops before the handover cleared all access roads to those lands and the Kovil. After a special pooja attended by Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, District Secretary for Jaffna Mrs. Emelda Sukumar, Kopay Divisional Secretary Mr. M. Pratheepan, senior Army officers and a large crowd of villagers, symbolic exchange of deeds and documents took place with a representative group of owners.
