Para-Beach Volleyball National Championship Goes to Sri Lanka Light Infantry Players

The finals of Para-Beach Volleyball National Championship, held for the first time for disable Army sportsmen ended on Sunday (18) at Wadduwa Holiday Resort beach with the participation of a large gathering of sportsmen and enthusiasts.

Beach Volleyball was introduced for the first time to the Army para sports calendar a few weeks ago with the Inter Regiment Tournament. There are 13 other sport features that have so far been included and contested in the para sports tournament.
 
Championship in the novel beach volleyball tournament went to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and Sri Lanka National Guards (SLNG) players emerged runners-up. The 3rd place was clinched by players representing Gajaba Regiment (GR). The winning Regimental teams received cash prizes.

Contestants, Corporal E.D.P. Lalith Kumara (SLLI), Corporal W.M.A. Priyankara (SLLI) and Private K.K.W. Saman Kumara (SLLI) were adjudged the Best Receiver, Best Volleyball Player and Best Server respectively during the finals. M.M. Ananda of Sri Lanka National Guards (SLNG) was chosen as the Best Attacker.

At the invitation of Major General E.P De Z Abeysekara, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Association for Disable Beach Volleyball, Major General R.M.D. Rathnayake, Chief of Staff, Army Headquarters gave away the Championship Trophy to the winners. Major General E.P De Z Abeysekara and several senior officers in the Army witnessed the finals.

Volleyball for disabled persons is generally played under three categories, standing, beach and sitting volleyball.
