Pakistan Army and 6 SLAWC Take Away SLAVF Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship Trophies

The Inter-Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2016, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF), ended on Friday (3) at the Maharagama National Youth Centre Indoor Stadium where a visiting Pakistan Army Volleyball team also vied as a participating team.

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, SLAVF attended the occasion as the Chief Guest. SLAVF Deputy Commandant Brigadier W.H.D Mahanada welcomed the Chief Guest on arrival.

Afterwards, the two teams, qualified to play in the final volleyball match and the judges in the game were introduced to the Chief Guest as formalities.

SLAVF volleyball players in Regiments / Corps including Women Corps, entered the fray in the tournament with enormous interest and dedication on Monday (30).      Visiting Pakistan team secured the Men’s Trophy with an overwhelming victory of 3-1 against the SLLI team after an exciting battle which brought amusement and delight. 

Pakistan Army players and the SLLI and the Sri Lanka Service Corps respectively received championship, 1st runners-up and 2nd runners-up trophies in the tournament. 

In the meantime, woman volleyball players of 6 Sri Lanka Women’s Corps (SLAWC) volleyball team, 2 SLAWC  team and Sri Lanka General Service Corps team respectively won the trophies for  championship, 1st runners-up and 2nd runners-up trophies in the tournament. 

Similarly, 2 SLAWC and 6 SLAWC teams won the championship trophy and the runners-up trophy respectively in the Inter Unit Netball Tournament, held at the same place on Thursday (2) with the participation of Major General Channa Goonetilleke as the Chief Guest of the event.     

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, SLAVF together with other distinguished guest gave away trophies and certificates to the winners.

The closing ceremony was attended by Colonel Mohammed Rajil Irshad Khan, Defence Attaché at Pakistan High Commission for Sri Lanka, Mr Eranda Velianga, Director General, National Youth Centre, Maharagama, Major General (Retired) W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe, Former Deputy Commandant, SLAVF, Deputy Commandant Brigadier W. H. D. Mahanada, the Principal Staff Officer Brigadier K Prematilleke, Directors Regimental Centre Commandants, senior officers, other ranks and a large gathering of volleyball fans.
