PACES Competition in Jaffna Held with Renewed Vigour

The Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J)-organized Physical Agility and Combat Efficiency System (PACES) competition got underway on Wednesday (7) at Mailaddy Firing Range in Jaffna for troops serving the Jaffna peninsula.

The Physical Agility and Combat Efficiency System, generally referred as PACES is an initiative to improve physical standards of military personnel which in turn help them in enhancing their strength, ability and coordination between the mind and the body.

Following an initiative of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna, Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi, this competition was introduced for the first time in the Jaffna peninsula. The competition also improves capacity for future multi-dimensional battlefield environments that are generally essential for a soldier.

Under the guidelines given by the Jaffna Commander, the event was organized by the General Staff Officer I (Operation and Training), Lieutenant Colonel Nishantha Muthumala under the supervision of Major General Roshan Senevirathna, General Officer Commanding, 51 Division in coordination with Colonel Senaka Kasthurimudali, 515 Brigade Commander.

42 competing teams from different regiments in Jaffna area participated in the preliminary selections, held from 26 February to 6 March 2018, in order to be selected for the best out of the best for both teams and individual basis.

Finally, 5 Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) team was placed the overall best PACES team whilst 11 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and 7 (V) Gajaba Regiment (GR) teams secured second and third places respectively.

Corporal P.P.D Haputhantri from 5 SLASC was adjudged the fittest of the fits and Corporal D.M.J Ajith Kumara of the 4 Mechanized Infantry Regiment (MIR) secured the second place. The third place went to Private W.D Lakmal of the 2 (V) SLLI. Corporal P.P.D Haputhantri meanwhile managed to complete the 3.2 km runin 11 minutes and 24 seconds, did 34 pull-ups, 972 sit-ups, 443 push-ups and won the Combat Efficiency Test (CET) in 69 seconds to become the fittest among all.

Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) graced the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest at Mailaddy Firing Range and awarded trophies and merit certificates to winning teams and individuals. General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Senior Officers and a large number of Army Personnel attended the closing ceremony.
