Officers & Senior Officers Join New Marathon Initiative at Panagoda

Sri Lanka Army Officers’ introductory Marathon Run, a new addition to the Army routine of sports, exclusive for all Regimental officers, flagged off on Sunday (6) at Meepe with hundreds of senior officers as a novel project, proposed by Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army. 

A gathering of about 500 officers in the ranks of 2/Lieutenants, Lieutenants, Captains, Majors, Lieutenant Colonels, Colonels and Brigadiers together with the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva started off the Marathon Run - 2016 at Meepe early in the morning to wend their way to Football ground at Panagoda Army Cantonment. 

The Marathon Run had been organized under two distance categories, one meant for officers above the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (6.4 km) and the other for officers below the rank of Major (14.4 km). Launched by the office of the Director General Army Sports, the new experiment for the cream of the Army, dressed in colourful track kits with respective colours of their specific regiments, drew much attention of the public along the road. 

This Inter Regiment Officers’ Marathon Run, held on par with international standards was observed by a panel of judges of national and international standards as arranged by the Army Athletic Committee. 

The awarding ceremony in this maiden event of the Army got underway the same morning after a few hours at the Football ground, Panagoda, headed by Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army, the pioneering architect of the new addition, in the company of Major General Milinda Peiris, Chief of Staff, Major General Sumedha Perera, Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General B.A Perera, Director General General Staff and a few other senior most officers, including Major General S.R Manawaduge, Director General Army Sports.

In a rare spectacle, all Colonels of the Regiments of the Army and Centre Commandants of the Regiments of the Army took part in the first Marathon Run for officers and the awarding ceremony that followed later on.
