New Year Spirits Go to 54 Division, 61 Division & 62 Division Troops in Wanni

Troops in the 54 Division organized a Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival on Sunday (24)  near  the Thiruketheeswaran Tank area in Mannar under the guidance of Major General W. D .P. Fernando, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 54 Division of the Security Force Headquarters -Wanni.

In the meantime, troops of the 17 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) serving under the 62 Division organized its Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival in the Padavi Parakkramapura  public grounds under the supervision of  Brigadier A. A Kodippili, GOC, 62 Division on Friday (22).

Both events were graced by Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, Security Forces-Wanni (SF-W) as the Chief Guest at the invitation of GOCs, together with Major General W.D.P Fernando and Brigadier A. A Kodippili as distinguished guests.

During the festivals, a number of New Year games and competitions, including pot cracking, pillow fighting, tug of war, cycle races, cadjan-weaving, grease pole climbing, fancy dress and selection of the New Year princess, etc got underway with the participation of troops and civilians in the area.

Winners of the games received gift parcels from the chief guest, GOCs and distinguished guests as dusk fell.

Similarly, troops in 61 Division organized a Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival on Saturday (23) at the 61 Division playground under the guidance GOC of 61 Division of Security Force Headquarters – Wanni.
During the festival, same folk games were held at the venue to coincide with the New Year festival.
As the final event of the day’s programme, a musical evening got underway with the participation of the all ranks. 

Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Officers, Other ranks, government officers and residents of the area participated in the festival and enjoyed the day.
