New Navy Commander Meets His Army Counterpart During Courtesy Call

The newly-appointed 22nd Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe WWV RWP USP ndc psc AOWC this morning (6) paid a courtesy call on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake at the Army Headquarters.

Vice Admiral Ranasinghe on arrival at the Army Headquarters inspected the Guard Turnout in accordance with military traditions and received the salute in a Guard of Honour, accorded by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry. He was conducted to the dais by Major General Shavendra Silva, Adjutant General.

At the entrance to the Commander’s Secretariat, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, warmly received the visiting Navy Commander and he was afterwards introduced to the Principal Staff Officers in the Army.

Vice Admiral Ranasinghe and his Army counterpart, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake in a formal meeting that ensued at the Army Commander’s office exchanged views on matters of bilateral relevance and interest.

They both recalled close cooperation prevailing between both organizations in different spheres of duties and responsibilities.

Towards the end of the courtesy meet, both of them exchanged mementoes to signify the importance of the day’s meeting.

Vice Admiral Ranasinghe as the initial Commanding Officer of the SLNS Samudura (Ex-USCGS Courageous) commanded the longest voyage in the SLN history from New Port USA to Colombo.

He commanded the elite Fast Attack Squadron from 2002 to 2004 and served as the Deputy Area Commander Southern Naval Area in 2008, Commander Southern Naval Area in 2012 and the Commander Western Naval Area from 2013 to 2014. He has held many important appointments, including Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy, Director Naval Operations, Director Naval Weapons, Director Marine Special Forces, Director Naval Projects and Plans and Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard.

Vice Admiral Ranasinghe is a keen sportsman and had received Britannia Royal Naval College Colours for badminton. He was also the recipient of the Triple Crown for badminton in 1997 in the Navy Inter Command Tournament.

Vice Admiral Ranasinghe is married to Mrs Sandya, and they are blessed with one daughter, Supuni.
