New Jaffna Commander assumes office

The New Commander, Security Forces Headquaters, Jaffna Major General S.D Tennakoon RSP ndc assumed his duties this morning, Aug 20, 2004 at his office in Jaffna.

The new Commander upon assumption of his duties was accorded a Guard of Honour by troops of the Sri Lanka Artillery Brigade.

After lighting the traditional oil lamp, a Pirith chanting ceremony was conducted by the incumbent at Jaffna Naga Vihara to invoke blessings on the new appointment. After offering of Pirikara was made to the Maha Sangha, the new Commander symbolically placed his signature on a document to signify his assumption of duties. After sharing a cup of tea with all Ranks, he had a joint discussion with all Jaffna-based General Officers Commanding in 51, 52, 53 & 55 Divisions, deployed in the peninsula. He is expected to address troops on Saturday (21).

After joining the Sri Lanka Army on 24 July 1971 as an Officer Cadet, he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Artillery Regiment in 1972. Major Gen Tennekoon who served as General Officer Commanding, 22 Division in Trincomalee, 55 Division in Mirusuvil, and in a number of other senior appointments also functioned as the Military Spokesman in 1998 before he was appointed the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Military Intelligence. He also has followed several overseas courses including the Pakistan National Defence College, Fy-98US Expended Programme, etc.
