New IT Centre at GW Regiment Centre Offers Training to War Heroes &;amp; Their Families

The Army, with its proven capability to meet with any challenge, is to supplement its troops by imparting IT knowledge following a directive given by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

The Gemunu Watch (GW) Regiment Centre at Kuruwita with the sole intention of disseminating IT knowledge among GW troops and family members of GW soldiers, had its state of the art new ‘Ranaviru Information Technology Training Institute’ opened on Saturday (26), along with a new Medical Centre in the Regiment Complex.

The Diyawannaoya Lions Club undertook the responsibility for the IT centre, following coordination done by Lion Anil Ajantha, Project President, Diyawannaoya Lions Club and Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe, the Chief Signal Officer, Sri Lanka Army where Lions J.R.K.C Balasooriya, Director (Projects) at Diyawannaoya Lions Club made a personal monetary contribution for the realization of the Ranaviru IT Centre.

The IT Centre as well as the new Medical Centre, opened on the same occasion by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya who graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest, has facilities to accommodate War Heroes as well as their children and other interested family members.

Dr Kapila Kannangara, Director, Provincial Health Services, Ratnapura sponsored the establishment of this new Medical Centre for the welfare of War Heroes and their families.

The Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on arrival at the GW Regimental Headquarters inspected the Guard Turnout and received the Guard of Honour, accorded in his honour before he symbolically planted a tree sapling in the complex as a token of memory of his visit to the Regiment Centre.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya next visited to open the new Medical Centre on the invitation of the Colonel of the GW Regiment. Soon after its opening, the Commander declared opened the new Ranaviru IT Centre amidst blessings and went round to see for himself how the Centre operates.

In his brief address to the occasion, the Commander said that the government on the directions of HE the President and Defence Secretary is all out to assist the disable War Heroes, War Heroes and their families. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya citing instances where similar IT Centres were established in the Army, urged those interested to make the maximum benefit of these resources.

‘We have already begun such centres in Kandy, Panagoda and Anuradhapura Army Camps. In the future, such centres will be opened in all remote areas. With the development of IT, the Army will have a better networking system. The gestures of the Lions Club should be appreciated and commended’, he said.

Mr Anil Ajantha of the Diyawannaoya Lions Club delivered a speech on the occasion, explaining why his Club undertook this project.

In order to show the Army’s appreciation and recognition of the good services of the donors and others, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya presented three special mementos to Mr J.R.K.C Balasooriya, Dr Kapila Kannangara and Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe on the occasion.
