New Chinese Ambassador Makes First Formal Visit to Army Headquarters

The newly-appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Sri Lanka, His Excellency Mr Cheng Xueyuan, together with a delegation of Chinese Embassy officials made his first formal courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters this evening (3) and met Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army.

The Chinese envoy after extending greetings to the Sri Lanka Army on its achievements and roles being played for the greater benefit of the Sri Lankan nation explicitly explained his government's robust initiative, 'One Belt - One Road' (OBOR) in a bid to enhance regional connectivity and embrace a brighter future together.

Mr Xueyuan further pointed out to the Commander that the action plan has identified Sri Lanka as an important stop on the maritime silk road since ancient times and the OBOR as a golden opportunity for improvement of local economic conditions.

The Chinese envoy during the meeting with the Commander of the Army maintained that Sri Lanka's military cooperation and understanding is ever on the increase with more and more exchange programmes continuing.

Lieutenant General Senanayake attentively listened to the Ambassador’s explanation and pledged his organizations professional capabilities and the Army’s professionalism and technical know-how in the implementation of national projects in the future.

Towards the end of the cordial meeting, both of them exchanged mementos as tokens of goodwill and understanding.
