New Archway to SLAC Regimental Hqrs Adds Grandeur

The Regimental Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) wore festive garbs on Monday (10) when the SLAC’s Colonel of the Regiment, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army ceremonially opened the new archway (gate) to the premises during a fitting ceremony.

The Chief Guest on the occasion, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya upon receipt by the SLAC Centre Commandant was invited to declare open the new archway after unveiling a plaque to that effect.

A Guard Turnout presented by SLAC soldiers saluted the visiting Commander of the Army in accordance with military formalities.

The new archway, constructed by SLAC soldiers and engineers with the directions given by the Commander himself added dignity and grandeur to the premises at Mutwal. It was only a few weeks ago the Commander who has always been in touch with the progress of his regiment opened a new building complex which houses many wings of the SLAC Regiment.

Soon after opening of the new archway, the Commander of the Army, together with senior officers inspected a couple of buildings in the premises and interacted with officers on duty at respective places giving necessary instructions.

SLAC with its cherished motto, ‘Whither the fates call’ saw its birth as the First Cavalry Regiment of the Army, 1st Reconnaissance Regiment. On 10th October 1955, Armour commenced its journey after Ceylon Armoured Corps was raised under the able leadership of General D.S. Attygalle, eternally remembered as the father of the SLAC. The Regimental Headquarters was moved from Echelon Barracks to the present location at Mutwal.

To its credit, the SLAC has so far produced a fine assortment of prestigious military leaders to the country, including several Commanders of the Army, Secretaries to Ministry of Defence, Chiefs of Staff, Commandants of Army Volunteer Forces, Northern and Eastern Commanders, Directors, Military Attaches, et al.
