Muslim Civil Society Holds Open Air ‘Iftar’ Ritual

An open air ‘Iftar’, the traditional breaking of fast ritual, organized by the Sri Lanka Muslim Civil Society (SLMCS) with the objective of promoting community harmony and fostering ties got underway on the Colombo Town Hall lawn on Saturday (25) at 5.30 p.m.

At the invitation of the SLMCS and the Mayoress of Colombo Ms Rosy Senanayake, a group of Army personnel, headed by Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army took part in the event, in which a special prayer session was observed in memory of victims who died in the tragic terrorist attacks on 21 April 2019.

The programme, named as ‘Break-Fast at Sunset’ was joined by more than 1000 people from all walks of life, irrespective of race, religion, gender or ethnicity sharing a meal at sunset.

‘Break-Fast at Sunset’ according to the SLMCS serves as an ideal platform to demonstrate the essence of togetherness and a crucial occasion for all our ethnic communities to stand in solidarity as Sri Lankans and to say a prayer for our people and our country, guided by the true spirits of Islam which will also highlight the manner in which fasting promotes peace, charity, compassion and better understanding between peoples of different ethnicities.

The SLMCS was also instrumental in organizing the ‘Solidarity Vigil’, one of the firsts to be held on 4th May 2019 in the country soon after the Easter attacks on 21 April.

Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander of the Navy, Major General T.S Bangsajayah, Director General Army Training, Major General Chula Abeynayake, General Officer Commanding, 14 Division, a group of tri-service Muslim Officers and Other Rankers and a large gathering of civilians joined the event as a symbol of unity and solidarity.
