Much-Looked Forward ‘Walawe Supercross’ 9th Edition Thunders in Sevanagala

The much-looked forward 9th Edition of the ‘Walawe Supercross - 2019’ enthusiastically organized by the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee of the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SLEME) sped off at the Uda Walawe Supercross tracks in Sevanagala, Uda Walawe on Sunday (22) in the presence of a record racing lovers and spectators.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest for the inauguration flagged off the day's thrilling spectacle amid cheers and applause. Major General Wasantha Madola Chairman, Army Motor Sports Committee extended a warm welcome to the day's chief guest with a host of other Senior Officers.

The inaugural meet was held in 2011 and has since then gone from strength to strength and this year too, the organizers along with the sponsors did their maximum to make it a memorable one in one of the best racing tracks of Sri Lanka. Nearly 250 drivers and riders battled it out for supremacy in different classes of vehicles in this year’s meet, organized by Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Corps and conducted by the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club.

The Walawe Supercross is not only fun and enjoyment for the spectators. The SLEME is conducting this with a worthy cause in mind as all proceeds go for the benefit of terrorist victims of the regiment and also for disabled soldiers. 24 events kicked off for the day with eight in the motor cycle and sixteen in motor car categories.

The Walawe Supercross, initiated in 2011, is not only fun and enjoyment for the spectators. The SLEME is conducting this with a worthy cause in mind as all proceeds will work for the benefit of terrorist victims of the regiment and also for disabled soldiers. Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club (SLMCC) members are the organizers of this event and is sponsored by Cause way paints The track situated at the 17th mile post on the Uda Walawe-Thanamalwila main road, just outside the Army camp is close to the Uda Walawe National Park. Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee Wasantha Madola and Vice Chairman together with Army Motor Sports Committee have taken great pains in successfully organizing the event for the past nine years.

Twenty-four events got underway for the day with Eight in the motor cycle and sixteen in motor car categories. Special events for youngsters and children too drew attention of the attendees. Standard/Modified up to 125cc (2T&4T), Standard/Modified up to 125cc 2T & 250cc 4T (Twin Races). Forces event up to 125cc 2T (Special Club Event), Racing Motorcycles over 100cc up to 125cc (2T), Racing Motorcycles over 100cc up to 125cc 2T & over 175cc up to 250cc 4T (Twin Races), etc are among major competing features.

The day's Chief Guest gave away cash prizes, trophies and certificates to the winners at the end of the meet. The Organizers also awarded a Challenge Trophy in memory Super Motor Champion, late rider, Ananda Wedisinghe. This award was received by the best rider in the Group Super Motor in two events.
