More Donations for Disabled War Heroes

THE Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) under the guidance of its President Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya made a donation of artificial limbs and commode sets to disabled War Heroes and scholarships to sons and daughters of the War Heroes who participated in recent humanitarian operations.

The Chief Guest for the simple ceremony organized for this purpose was the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya. It was held on Saturday (28) at the Indoor Stadium at Army Headquarters. About 150 disabled soldiers received commode sets while another 11 disabled soldiers received artificial limbs on this occasion. Scholarships for 25 sons and daughters of the War Heroes were also given away at the same time.

The sponsorship for the artificial limbs was supplied by Mr. Channa Ranasinghe, a friend of the Army Commander during his school days who is also the President, United Sri Lanka Association in New Zealand. The funds for the limbs were donated by the members of the Sri Lankan Community living in Wellington, New Zealand as a joint project organized by the United Sri Lanka Association and planning to make further contributions. The commode sets had been supplied by Ceylon Knit Trend Limited of Hydramanee Group. Twenty-five students of War Hero families received pass books with a deposit of Rs. 10,000/= each in “Ran Kekulu” accounts at Bank of Ceylon Lake House Branch. The funds for the scholarships had been released by the SVAB. Commander gave away a portion of artificial limbs and “Ran Kekulu” pass books to the recipients. Other distinguish guests also took part in the distribution.     

At the same time, a cheque worth Rs. 2,028,000/= was also handed over by Pastor Rev. Niroshan Perera representing People’s Church in Narahenpita to Mrs. Manjulika Jayasuriya to provide artificial limbs for the disabled soldiers in the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR). The gesture was coordinated by an active member of SLSR Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Rajitha Jayasuriya.

Senior officers from Army Headquarters, SVAB members, the Manager, Bank of Ceylon Lake House Branch Mr. Shantha Nugegoda, several philanthropists, scholarship recipients and their parents were present on the occasion.
