More than 200 Riders &;amp; Drivers to Compete at NCP's Mammoth 'Gajaba Super Cross - 2011'

The year’s most-awaited thrilling motor racing event, Gajaba Super Cross-2011 with exciting 26 racing car and motorbike events, scheduled for 28th August at Saliyapura, Anuradhapura, is to send shock waves among motor racing fans as this year’s mammoth project is to draw as many as some 200 local and foreign competitors in driving and riding.

Announcing the arrangements for the grand event during a media briefing on Thursday (4) in Colombo, Major General A.K.S Perera, Colonel of the Gajaba Regiment and Commander, Security Forces, Wanni outlined the objective of holding a mega event of this nature every year.

‘Funds generated by this event go to welfare roles, meant for injured Gajaba Regiment (GR) War Heroes, family members of fallen and missing War Heroes and further improvement of infrastructure facilities of the GR Regimental Headquarters. The event, first launched in 1999 at GR Regimental Headquarters own track at Saliyapura, is held this year for the tenth time, though it could not be held in the years 2008 and 2009 due to intensification of the battlefield requirements’, Major General Perera said.

‘The Super Cross-2011 organized in close coordination with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) consists of four motorbike events for child riders under 10,13 and 16 years of age. The annual event, the biggest crowd-puller in the North Central Province has been competed for the last couple of years by veterans in the field like M.S.K Dhammika, E.B Gurusinghe, Upulwan Serasinghe, Ravi Mayadunne, Udesh Wedisinghe, Ashan Silva, Shavindu Shenal, Yohan Rajith Silva, Dinesh Anurudda, S.C Adikari, Gayan Sandaruwan, Shriyantha Marasinghe and a few foreign riders and drivers’, Major General Perera added.   

The Saliyapura Racing Track this year provides thrill and excitement to seven motor car events under 12.00 kg/hp, up to 1400 cc, SL-H cars up to 1600 cc, SL-N-cars 10-12 kg/Hp, SL-GT cars up to 3500 cc, SLN-cars Mini-7 -1000 cc, SL-H car up to 1600 cc, SL-GT cars up to 3500 cc categories. Similarly, riders on motorbikes under 125 cc, 250 cc, 85 cc, 1400 cc, 1600 cc, and 5500 cc categories.

Major General Chargi Gallage, representatives of main sponsors and a few others who were present at the occasion contributed to the media briefing.
