Massive Crowds Compel Jaffna 'Vesak Zone' Extend by Another Day

Unprecedented numbers of Vesak sight-seers in Jaffna, unlike in the previous years, enjoyed the spirit of the event in an enthusiastic manner during the three-day long Vesak Zone, arranged by troops serving the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna.

Over 40 multi coloured huge Vesak lanterns, recital of Tamil and Sinhala devotional songs, jointly presented by Sinhala and Tamil students and numerous illuminations in the centre of Jaffna town attracted a record 100,000 visitors in the three days.

All arrangements, supervised personally and closely by none other than Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna, himself were supported with free distribution of herbal and soft drinks to the visitors, courtesy the Jaffna Prison Headquarters and the Jaffna Police Headquarters.

Dansela put up by the 55 Division in the Vesak zone offered free meals to the visitors throughout the whole night and various life stories of the Buddha, exhibited in the zone using dummies and replicas became highly attractive to the visitors.

A special pandol, erected by soldiers at the gateway to the main Jaffna city was another huge attraction during these three days. Major General G.A Chandrasiri (Rtd), Governor for Northern Province, Minister Douglas Devananda and several others opened the Vesak zone during May 5-6.

In the meantime, Buddhist undergraduates at University of Jaffna joined together at Thirunelveli junction on Jaffna-Palaly road for the second consecutive year and held a soft drink Dansela on Saturday (6) on account of the sacred Vesak commemoration.

In view of massive crowds, the Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna has decided to extend the Vesak zone up until Tuesday (8) night.
