Major General Manawaduge’s Funeral Held with Military Honours

Military funeral of late Major General Sumith R Manawaduge RWP RSP ndu psc IG was held this afternoon (8) at General Cemetery Colombo amidst a large gathering of mourners including Lieutenant General Chrishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army.   

Major General Sumith R Manawaduge RWP RSP ndu psc IG passed away Friday (6) at the Intensive Care Unit, National Hospital, Colombo after he accidentally sustained serious injuries inside a building a few days ago.

Major General Manawaduge who was performing duties as the Director General Sports of the Army and Colonel Commandant Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) Regiment has served the Army for more than 36 years in varying capacities including those in the operational areas.

Enlisted to the Army on 11 August 1980 to the Intake 14 of the Sri Lanka Military Academy, he received his commissions as a 2 Lieutenant on 27 February 1982 after near two-year basic military training.

His military education covered Artillery Young Officer course in India (1985), Artillery Advanced Gunnery Course in India (1989), Gunnery Staff Course in Pakistan (1995), Senior Command Course in India (1997), Army Command and Staff College course (1998) and a few more courses. He holds an Msc in Defence and Strategic Studies, awarded from the University of Beijing. China.

Some of the key appointments, he held included Staff Officer II at Mannar Sector, General Officer Commanding (55 Division), 552 Brigade Commander, 215 Brigade Commander, Commandant, Sri Lanka Artillery Regimental Centre, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division, Commander, Area Headquarters, Kandy (11 Division), Commander, Security Force Headquarters - South, Deputy High Commissioner for Malaysia (August 2013 - May 2015) and the Director General Sports of the Army and Colonel Commandant, SLA up until his premature death.

In recognition of his bravery during major operations, he was awarded Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP). He was expected to retire from the Army on 12 July 2016. He leaves behind Mrs Sudharma Manawaduge and three children (a son and two daughters).
