Leading Buddhist Monks Protest UK Stance; Defence Secretary Assures No Harm to British HC

COLOMBO: OVER three hundred leading Buddhist monks, led by Ven. Dr Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thera staged a peaceful sit-on protest opposite the Colombo-based British High Commission against the UK’s opposition to the elimination of LTTE terrorism in Sri Lanka on Wednesday (29).

The protesters, backed by many patriotic civilians and monks attached to the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) held placards and banners that condemned the UK’s most recent controversial statements and illogical decisions regarding the last stage of the war against terrorism.

While the disciplined protest was on, reports confirmed British diplomats in the High Commission, moved and disturbed, due to presence of the agitators had phoned up Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa requesting for stepped up security for the premises. But the Secretary Defence has reportedly turned down the High Commission request giving an undertaking that no untoward or violent reaction would arise, unlike what happened in the UK and therefore no extra security was needed to the place.

The agitators according to Ven. Sobhitha Thera delivered a memorandum to the High Commission officials at the end of the agitation.
