Kilinochchi Troops Initiate Planting of 135,000 Saplings under ‘Wana Ropa’ Project

Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN), responding to the National Tree Planting Programme, ‘Wana Ropa’, declared by HE the President Maithripala Sirisena has launched a mammoth drive to plant a record 135,000 saplings in the Kilinochchi District with the participation of civilians in respective areas.

Under the guidance of Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi (SF-KLN), the 57 Division Headquarters taking the lead for the project inaugurated the distribution ceremony on Monday (25) at the utility hall of the 57 Division Headquarters under the supervision of Major General Jagath Gunawardena, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division.

Symbolizing the distribution of those saplings among civilians, Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana as the Chief Guest for the inaugural ceremony handed over a sapling to Mr Nallathambi Jayandran, a civilian resident in the Kilinochchi township. On the same occasion, 2,000 saplings were distributed among Kilinochchi civilians and troops.

The project, unique in nature collects all those saplings from all ranks serving the 57 Division after requesting them to bring a sapling from their respective villages when they return to work upon completion of their routine leave periods.

Troops of the 57 Division expect to plant 100,000 saplings in the heart of Kilinochchi and surrounding areas while the balance 35,000 are to be distributed among all respective Battalions under command to the 57 Division and the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN).

Saplings of Jak, Coconut, Kumbuk, Margosa, Maadam, Malla, Maara, Cashew, Weera, Palu, Orange, Arecanut, Breadfruit and many other varieties are to be planted under the programme on a staggered basis before the end of the year.

This novel initiative, which has come under commendation of Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi and Mr. Nallathambi Jayandran, District Forest Officer were to be eventually extended to different villages as well in close coordination with respective Divisional Secretariats and Grama Seva officials.

Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana in his brief address to the troops and the gathering highlighted the importance of a project of this nature and urged everyone to cooperate with the tree planting drive for the greater benefit of the nation.

Brigade Commanders of 571,572 and 574 Brigades, all Commanding Officers of under command battalions and 300 Other Ranks, representing all formations were present at the inaugural ceremony in Kilinochchi.
