300 school students of low-income families in the Kilinochchi district were delighted to receive free school accessories and new bank accounts during a simple ceremony on Saturday (17) at Nelumpiyasa auditorium in Kilinochchi, following an initiative taken by the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) under the guidance of Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi (SF-KLN).
The main branch of the Buddhist Association of Colombo People's Bank and its General Secretary, Mr Preethi Kollonnage, together with other members have provided the sponsorship for the donation in response to a request, extended to the organization by the Commander, SF-KLN, considering poverty levels prevailing in Kilinochchi areas.
Exercise books, drawing books, mathematical instruments, school bags, shoes, accessories and other essential stationery items were among those incentives, given to 300 students free of charge as fillips to students learning in Kilinochchi schools.
One more appreciative segment of this charity programme on the same day was the opening of new ‘Sisu Udana’ savings accounts for all those 300 recipients who received free school accessories.
The proprietor of Kilinochchi Guru Hardware in conjunction with the manager of the People's Bank in Kilinochchi sponsored the supply of those savings books to students under the ongoing 'Sisu Udana' accounts scheme.
The Commander, SF-KLN attended the distribution ceremony as the Chief Guest with Mr Preethi Kolonnage, General Secretary, People's Bank Buddhist Association, Colombo main branch.
Major General Sarath Weerawardane, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division, Mr Lahiru Senaratne, Treasurer, People's Bank Buddhist Association, Mr Praveen Mahesha and Rayan Sampath, Committee members of the People’s Bank Buddhist Association, several Senior Officers, teachers in the area, parents and students took part in the arrangement.
