Kilinochchi, Mankulam, Kanagarayankulam &;amp; Punani Civilians Join Troops to Celebrate National New Year Festival

With the intention of further promoting civil-military relations in the North and Wanni, troops serving different formations enthusiastically contributed to the conduct of National Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival, rich with traditional sweet-meats, rites and rituals, traditional games and sports, etc.

Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) at the end of its New Year festival at Kilinochchi public grounds had a mega musical entertainment, flavoured with melodies and rhythms, tuned by well known Tamil singers and artistes. Music session that went into late night on Friday (22) was backed by the popular ‘Agni’ band.

The festival mood that dominated the areas brought about a complete transformation in the minds of the public who in the past did not have any space to mark such an event due to LTTE threatening.    

Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Deputy Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralidaran, Hon Namal Rajapaksa, MP for Hambantota District, Major General Nandana Udawatta, Commander, SFHQ-KLN and a few others attended the series of events as chief guests.

Meanwhile, troops serving the 53 Division in Mankulam recently held their National Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival at Mankulam Maha Vidyalaya grounds.

Their New Year festival, replete with many traditional and fun-making events came to an end with a special musical night. Major General K.A.D.A Karunasekara, General Officer Commanding, senior officers, other ranks and a large gathering of civilians took part in the New Year celebrations.

In the meantime, troops serving the 561 Brigade in the 56 Division under the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W) held their New Year celebration at Kanagarayankulam school grounds on Monday (18).

Hundreds of civilians in the area, hand in hand with Army troops participated in the New Year event, inclusive of traditional sports and fun-making features. Gifts were also distributed among the winners. Brigadier N.A.G.C Napagoda, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division, Brigadier D.A.R Ranawaka, 561 Brigade Commander, and several leading citizens in the area attended the event as invited guests.

Meanwhile, 23 Division Headquarters at Punani on the directions of its General Officer Commanding, Brigadier Mahinda Mudalige organized a New Year celebration, attended by over 350 civilians of different ethnicities, Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese.

Selection of the ‘Bakmaha Princess’ and a few more fun-making competitions added colour and enjoyment to the attendees in the celebrations. A musical entertainment that went into late night followed the provision of refreshments and dinner to all those who were present at the occasion.
