Kilinochchi Glitters with Vesak Decorations

The splendours of Vesak, the thrice blessed day spread to every corner of the island, including distant Kilinochchi as recently recruited Tamil woman soldiers too enthusiastically contributed to the success of all arrangements together with their fellow-workmates at the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN).

A Vesak zone, established in the Kilinochchi Madya Maha Vidyalaya playground comprises a huge pandol, Vesak lanterns, devotional song presentation and free offer of meals (Dansela) and will remain open till Friday (31) after it began on Vesak Full Moon Poya Day (24). At the invitation of Major General Udaya Perera, Commander, SFHQ-KLN, Ms R Kethishwaran, District Secretary for Kilinochchi as the Chief Guest ceremonially opened the Vesak zone in the company of several senior officers and a visiting UN official. On the first day itself, a record crowd of Vesak sight-seers watched all commemorative decorations.

Hundreds of soldiers on Vesak day evening participated in a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama, held at Kilinochchi Lumbini Temple. The pandol of exceptional height and beauty with more than 30,000 colourful bulbs was put up by 11 Battalion and 15 Battalion Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) troops with the support of Tamil woman soldiers and fellow-soldiers.
