KDU Enters into Historic MoU for Medical Officer Training

GENERAL Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) marked another milestone in its history of twenty-eight years of lifespan today (2) when it entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ruhuna for training of its tri-service military medical students for the MBBS degree.

The first batch of twenty-five KDU medical cadets are to enrol to the University of Ruhuna shortly to undergo training at its Faculty of Medicine until the infrastructure for medical training is ready at the KDU. 

The brief ceremony for signing the MoU took place at Ministry of Defence in the presence of Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order who is also the Chairman of the Board of Management of the KDU and Prof. Gamini Samaranayake, Chairman University Grants Commission. The memorandum was signed by the KDU Vice Chancellor/Commandant Major General Milinda Peiris and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna Prof. Susirith Mendis. 

The KDU after successful completion of their graduate studies is to award the MBBS degree before they are posted as Medical Officers in the tri-services. This is the first intake of military cadets absorbed for graduate medical studies in any of the military training schools/establishments across the country. Dr. Tilak Weerasinghe, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna was also associated with the occasion.
