KDU's 8th International Research Symposium - 2015 Begins


The International Research Symposium (IRS) - 2015 of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on the theme ‘Inculcating Professionalism for National Development’ commenced this morning (27) at the KDU auditorium at Kandawalawatta, Ratmalana.

Minister of Justice, Mr Wijeyadasa Rajapakse graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest and delivered the keynote address in the inaugural session. He was welcomed on arrival at the premises by the Chancellor, KDU and the Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris.  

The annual symposium, 8th in sequel, comprised of simultaneous parallel sessions on thematic Defence, Medicine, Engineering, Law, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities and Education that come within the purview of KDU academia, is to be contributed to by a host of eminent and erudite scholars, intellectuals and professionals, drawn from Sri Lanka and other foreign capitals during both days (Aug 27-28).

40 guest speakers and more than 300 presenters from both local and foreign universities/institutes are expected to share their knowledge and discuss their research findings during the sessions. Academic scholars from India, Pakistan, Singapore, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Maldives, South Korea, Philippines, USA, UK, Germany and Australia have confirmed their participation.

Major General Milinda Peiris, Vice Chancellor, KDU together with Dr. Charitha Gunerathna, Chairperson, International Research Symposium - 2015 delivered opening remarks to the conference.

Mr B.M.U.D Basnayake, Secretary Defence, Lieutenant General Chrishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army, Commander of the Navy and Commander of the Air Force too were present at the inaugural session at the invitation of the KDU.

In parallel plenary sessions of the IRS, topical discussions in the fields of Medicine, Law, Engineering, Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, Education and Law, would be taken up. Several university academics, sociologists, engineers, managerial experts, scientists, legal luminaries from the country have been invited to conduct the deliberations.

KDU as the only defence university that offers graduate courses in defence studies in the South Asian region is spearheaded under the guidance of its Vice Chancellor, Major General Milinda Peiris and the academic staff.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence & Administration) Major General Ruwan Kulathunga, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof Thilak Weerasooriya, Dean - Faculty of Engineering Dr Thushara Weerawardene, Chairperson of the conference Dr Charitha Goonasekara attended the inauguration.
