Kandy Signal School Celebrates Sinhala & Hindu New Year

Officers and Other ranks serving at the School of Signals, Kandy, together with their families participated in Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations organized at the school ground on Wednesday (20). 

Giving priority to traditional sports and games, the festival commenced after the Commandant of the School of Signals Colonel Sugath Ratnayake hoisted the National Flag. 

It was followed by the recital of the National Anthem.

Permanent staff members, officers and other ranks presently following signal courses in the school, their spouses, children and relatives had a time full of fun and entertainment, enriched with values of Sinhalese culture. They participated in a range of traditional sports such as climbing of the greasy pole, cadjans weaving, eyeing the elephant, pillow fighting, marathon and so on.

A makeshift house similar to the Head of the village identified as Korale and his wife Menike situated in a traditional environment, which mirrored the ancient New Year celebrations, was the centre of attraction. 

At the invitation of  Korale, all participants were treated with traditional Sinhala eatables and herbal drinks at his house (walawwa). 

Winners were awarded valuable prizes by the Commandant, senior officers and invited guests. In addition, all children present were given New Year gifts by the Commandant, Signal School.
