Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, Chief of Staff (COS), Joint Staff of Japan Self Defence Force currently in Sri Lanka at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart, Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne, Chief of Defence Staff, paid his respect to the Cenotaph at the Colombo Viharamahadevi Park this evening (9).
At the Cenotaph premises, Army troops of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police, remained vigil as proceedings began to get underway with Admiral Kawano walking up to the memorial with a floral wreath.
Amid solemn military honours, he placed the floral wreath and saluted fallen war veterans. Accompanying members of the Japanese delegation followed suit and revered the memory of those War veterans.
Sounding of the Last Post in keeping with military traditions and accord of formal respect signalled the culmination of the brief memorial service. Several senior tri-service Officers were associated with the brief commemorative event.
Admiral Kawano currently in Sri Lanka is scheduled to meet key defence officials during his stay here.
