Jaffna University Students Show Solidarity with Affected Southern Students

In what could be described as a gesture that would help bring about reconciliation with their counterparts in the South, a representative group of undergraduates of the University of Jaffna, in a unique symbol of fellowship and understanding, were in Colombo on Friday (2) to purchase school accessories for distribution among more than 400 flood-affected students in Molkawa, Kukuleganga area.

Jaffna University undergraduates, showing their concern towards the national tragedy which had claimed innocent lives and equally displaced thousands, had jointly managed to collect about Rs 4 lakhs for purchase of school accessories, sufficient for 400 affected students in Grade 1 - 13 in the South before the organizers directly conveyed their intention to arrive in Colombo shortly to Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff who was formerly the Commander Security Forces - Jaffna for organizing the intended consignment of school accessories.

Responding to the request of Jaffna University students, Major General Senanayake with the support of the Headquarter Battalion of the Special Forces made all necessary arrangements including transport, food and accommodation for the group of donors, expecting to visit Kukuleganga area.

Those Jaffna undergraduates on Friday (2) arrived in Colombo and bought the consignment of school accessories with the support of members of the Army before they travelled to Molkawa Maha Vidyalaya premises in Kukuleganga for distribution of those relief items among 400 students who had gathered there.

Commandant at Kukuleganga-based Institute of Peace Support Operations Training Sri Lanka (IPSOTSL), Commanding Officer of the forthcoming Lebanon contingent at the IPSOTSL and the Headquarter Battalion of the Special Forces coordinated and supported the project at the invitation of those visiting Jaffna undergraduates.

During a brief meeting, those Jaffna undergraduates, mingling with affected students, gave away those school accessories to students, most of who are still confined to relief centres after their houses submerged in floods.
