Jaffna Badminton Tournament Finals Held on Grand Scale

The grand finale of the badminton tournament of the Security Force Headquarters – Jaffna (SFHQ-J) got underway at the SFHQ-J Indoor gymnasium on Friday (4).

All establishments under command to the SFHQ-J participated in this tournament after absence of so many years, thanks to the initiative, taken by Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi, Commander, Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J).

523 Brigade organizing the Badminton Tournament got 28 teams to compete with one another under two categories (single and double) and under two age groups (over 18 and over 40).

The winner of the over 18 age group (single) was Lance Corporal M.A.S Jayathilake of the 5 SLLI who represented the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna. The runner-up slot went to Lieutenant W.R.D.S Weerawaththa of the SLCMP.

The winners of the over 18 age group (double) were Major K.M.G.S Kodithuwakku of the Gemunu Watch and Major H.M.J Premathilake of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI). The Runners-up were Major P.A.A.N.M.S.K Weerasinghe of the SLLI and Major A.G.N Dhanasiri of the SLLI who represented the 2(V) SLLI.

The winner of the over 40 age group (single) was Major P.A.A.N.M.S.K Weerasinghe and the runner-up slot was secured by Lieutenant Colonel R.I Hanthanarachchi of the 4 Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP). The winners of the over 40 age group (double) were Lieutenant Colonel H.E.M.I.W.S.S Ekanayake, Gemunu Watch (GW) and Lieutenant Colonel B.N Madanayaka of GW who represented the 51 Division. The runners-up were Major I.G Hettiarrachchi of Corps of Engineer Services (CES) and Major N.P.C.N Gunasena of CES representing the 5 CES.

Major General Darshana Hettiarrachchi, Commander, Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the final awarding ceremony.

General Officer Commanding, 52 Division, Major General Laksiri Waduge and General Officer Commanding, 51 Division, Major General Roshan Senavirathna were also associated with the final event as special guests.

The arrangement made on a suggestion of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna with the aim of improving sportsmanship and developing cohesion among officers and soldiers as well as grooming them to reach national levels in future. The winners and runners-up were awarded trophies, medals and certificates by the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna and other GOCs attending the event. A large gathering of Army personnel witnessed the final event.
