Inter Regiment Wrestling Tournament Takes Place in Kilinochchi for the First Time

The first-ever Inter Regiment Sports Tournament in the Northern Province kicked off early this week at Nelum Piyasa in Kilinochchi, following initiatives taken by Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) who is also the Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Wrestling Association.
 
The one-week long 11th Inter Regiment Wrestling Tournament, ended on Thursday (31) with the participation of 14 Regiments in the whole of the tournament.  
 
A total of 290 wrestlers including 30 woman wrestlers took part under in 34 weight categories in novices and championship bouts to be judged by 11 referees / judges of the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation and Associated  with International Wrestling Styles. They assisted the Army Wrestling Committee for conduct of the tournament.
 
Lance Corporal W.S.C Fernando of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) was adjudged as the Best Wrestler while Private S.D.S Niroshini of 2 Battalion (v) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC), clinched the award for the Best Female Wrestler. Gunner K.W.M.S Fernando of Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) was adjudged as the Best Emerging Wrestler of the Tournament.
 
The Champions Challenge Trophy introduced for the first time was awarded to SLSR for scoring a total of 38 points while the runners-up Challenge Trophy was awarded to SLA for scoring 28 points.
 
In the Novices category it was Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) who grabbed the Challenge Trophy for scoring 31 points while Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) taking the runners-up Challenge Shield by scoring 28 points.
 
5 (v) Battalion SLAWC carried away the Champions Challenge Trophy while 4 (v) Battalion SLAWC taking the runners-up challenge shield.  
 
Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Chief of Staff and Chairman, Army Sports attended the finals of the tournament as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander, SFHQ-KLN. The Chief Guest gave away awards and shields.
