Information Center to be Set Up to Educate Visitors

An Information Center to educate visitors arriving at the War Hero monument in Kokavil, close to the Kokavil transmission tower is to be set up shortly, following a proposal made to that effect by the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN).

Initial work to put up a small structure for the purpose began on Friday (13) during a simple ceremony, headed by Major General Amal Karunasekara, Commander, Security Forces – Kilinichchi.

The proposed new Information Center at the Kokavil War Hero Monument premises will educate the visitors on the battle in Kokavil against terrorists on 11 June 1990.

This monument was erected in memory of all fallen War Heroes who valiantly defended the transmission tower, sacrificing their own lives. During this battle, Captain Saliya Upul Aladeniya, of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), laid his life without letting the enemy to overrun his small detachment, although the casualty figures were high inside the camp. In recognition of his bravery, the officer was posthumously awarded the highest gallantry medal, Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV).

Several senior officers, including the Commander Forward Maintenance Area, Brigadier Athula Galagamage, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division, Brigadier Vijith Subasinghe, Brigade Commander, 573 Brigade, officers and other ranks were present during the inauguration of work.
