Infantrymen in SLLI Awarded the Rest of Gallantry Medals

The investiture of the rest of Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) gallantry medals on Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) War Heroes who valiantly defended the unitary status of the country took place Sunday (13) at the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) Regimental Headquarters, Army Cantonment, Panagoda during a glittering ceremony.

Major General Amal Karunasekara, Colonel of the Regiment, SLLI as the Chief Guest awarded those RWP and RSP medals to family members of fallen SLLI War Heroes, retired War Heroes and serving War Heroes during this ceremony that got off in the SLLI Russell Hayne ground in the Army Cantonment.

SLLI War Heroes as a result of their unique and invaluable sacrifice, dedication and commitment to liberation of the country from terrorism were awarded a total of 1041 medals, including the most prestigious Weerodhara Vibushanaya (WV), Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya (WWV), Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) gallantry medals.

President Maithripala Sirisena, earlier gave away a segment of those medals to the laureates at the BMICH on 27 October 2016 while Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army on 3 November 2016 awarded another segment during a glittering ceremony at the Panagoda Army Cantonment indoor stadium.

SLLI War Heroes were accordingly on Sunday (13) awarded 420 medals at Panagoda. Chief Guest and senior officers joined in awarding those medals. In total, one WV medal, six WWV medals, two hundred and eighty-five RWP medals and seven hundred and forty-nine RSP medals had been set apart to the SLLI, recognizing their unmatched achievements as infantrymen in the battlefield.

Recital of the national anthem and observance of a two-minute silence in memory of all fallen War Heroes, set the stage to the apex of the day’s event, amid reverberating ‘Rana Bera’ sounds, presented by troupes of SLLI cultural bands.

Afterwards, Rana Wickrama Padakkama (RWP) was awarded to military officers and other ranks as a reward for allied or individual acts of heroism and bravery in the face of the enemy. It is also known as the combat gallantry medal.

Then, award of the Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) which is also regarded as the combat excellence medal followed. It recognizes individual and associated acts of heroism in facing the enemy.

The ceremony came to an end with the formal address of Major General Amal Karunasekara, before the patriotic song ‘Ratnadeepa Janma Bhoomi’ rent the air.

A gathering of senior officers, officers, recipients of laurels, next of kin of fallen War Heroes and other ranks witnessed the medal ceremony at Panagoda.
