Indian Navy Chief on Goodwill Visit Meets Army Commander

INDIAN Navy Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma, now in Sri Lanka on a five-day long official visit, called on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Monday (28) afternoon at Army Headquarters.

His visit, a gesture of goodwill, meant to promote existing bilateral relations further, was accorded a Guard Turnout plus a Guard of Honour at the Commander’s secretariat premises. On arrival at the premises, he was received by Lieutenant Colonel Sunil Ariyaratne, Commanding Officer, Army Headquarters Battalion. The visiting Navy Chief was later introduced to Senior Army Officers by Commander of the Army at the entrance to the main building. The delegation included several more India’s senior Naval officers.

During his meeting with Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, the visiting Navy Chief exchanged views on bilateral matters of concern to both Sri Lanka Army and India. The visiting Naval Chief also received a brief account of the successful completion of the 30-year long war. To signify his visit to the office of the Commander of the Army, the visiting Navy Chief left his signature on the VIP book at Commander’s secretariat.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, recalling past memories of the Indian support to the Army and the Navy thanked the visiting delegate for his country’s stance on Sri Lanka’s terrorist problem. Before Admiral Verma’s exit, both of them exchanged mementos as tokens of memory of the visit to the Army Headquarters.
