Hundreds of Tri-service Members Join ‘CISM’ Run on World Military Day

Hundreds of servicemen, led by their military chiefs took part in the International Military Sport Council (CISM) Day Run - 2017 on Saturday (18) after all of them assembled at the Galle Face Green.

Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke taking a keen interest in the event was also present to take part as the Chief Guest in the CISM Run.

The event coincided with the World Military Day. Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva who is also the incumbent President of the Defence Services Sports Board, together with his Navy counterpart, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathi, Senior Army, Navy and Air Force officers took the lead in the CISM run.

A few hundreds of personnel from all three services participated in the ‘CISM Day Run’ that kicked off from Galle Face and ended near the Defence Services College at Colombo 02 covering a distance of about 2 km.

The International Military Sport Council, ‘Conseil International du Sport Militaire’ (CISM), founded on 18 February 1948, every year organizes various sporting events in 134 member countries for members of the armed forces, through which military personnel of all services, who might have previously met in the battlefield, would be offered a meeting point in friendship.

The ultimate goal of the CISM run is to contribute to world peace by uniting armed forces through sports, achieving its motto, ‘Friendship through Sports’.

The International Military Sports Council (CISM) is one of the largest multidisciplinary organizations in the world. CISM organizes various sporting events for the armed forces of its 134 member countries and is one of the global sports organizations, in which the largest number of disciplines is represented. CISM annually organizes over twenty Military World Championships for approximately 30 different sports, continental and regional competitions, the Military World Games and most recently the Winter Games and World Cadet Games.

This is in accordance with the philosophy and the ideals which were set in CISM’s mission statement in 1998, signed by all the member countries. The ultimate goal of CISM is to contribute to world peace by uniting armed forces through sports, achieving its motto, “Friendship through Sport”.
