On His Birth Day, President Gifts 112 More Houses to Colombo-district Based War Heroes

The fourteenth phase of the ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ house construction project for War Heroes under the stewardship of Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, was inaugurated Monday (18) morning at Homagama, Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya grounds, headed by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa whose inspirational vision saw 13 such previous projects implemented.

The ceremony to hand over 112 newly-built houses in the Colombo District to recipients of Army (69), Navy (26) and Air Force (17) War Heroes, coincides with HE the President’s assumption of office and his birthday (Nov 18).

Those houses were made a reality through the funds collected for ‘Api Wenuwen Api’ project, meant for the welfare of War Heroes whose numerous sacrifices liberated the country from the 30-year long ruthless terrorism.

Today’s main ceremony at Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya grounds commenced after the President himself symbolically handed over the keys of a new house to the War Hero, Sergeant H.M.J.R Kumara of Gajaba Regiment in Homagama South area. Of those 112 houses, 86 were built solely by 4 Engineer Service Regiment (4 ESR) of the Army and the remainder by ‘Maga’ Company Ltd.

During the main ceremony, the President gave away keys to all house recipients, amidst a large gathering of distinguished invitees, including the President’s Secretary, Mr Lalith Weeratunge, Ministers, H.M Fowzie, Dinesh Gunawardena, Gamini Lokuge, Susil Premajayantha, Bandula Gunawardena, Wimal Weerawansa, Chief Minister for Western Province, Provincial Councillors, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Deputy Ministers, Secretaries, Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratanayake, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Inspector General of the Police, Mrs Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson, MoD Seva Vanitha Branch, Mrs Damayanthi Ratnayake, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), many spouses of the invitees and so on.

The ‘Api wenuwen Api” housing project of the Ministry of Defence has been so far successfully implemented in Kandy, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Moneragala, Badulla, Ampara, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Kalutara, Kegalle, Polonnaruwa, Gampaha, Ratnapura, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts.

War Heroes, their spouses and children as well as students at Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya received special gift parcels on the same occasion in parallel with the President’s visit to the area.

Meanwhile, the President on his way back paused at the Panagoda Army Cantonment and joined a simple ceremony organized at the Sri Lanka Artillery Regimental Headquarters. There he cut a birthday cake and spent a few minutes with officers and other ranks who were present there to extend birthday wishes to their Commander-in-Chief HE, the President.   

Adding a symbolic importance to the Sri Lanka Artillery Headquarters at Panagoda, the President Planted a tree sapling in the premises.
