Hindu 'Abishekam' Pooja Invokes Blessings on Army Forward March

The religious ceremony, ‘Abishekam’ Pooja of Hindu tradition, the second forerunner to the series of Army anniversary events on Tuesday (2), invoked blessings on 63rd Army Anniversary and Army Day (October 10) during a special event at Colombo.

The ‘Abishekam’ Pooja at Sri Ponnambalam Vaneshwarar Kovil, Colombo 13, organized by Sri Lanka Army Hindu Association, was graced by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest where the Army flag was symbolically blessed after taking it into the inner chamber of the Kovil.

Symbolic regimental and formation flags remained fluttering inside the Kovil premises as religious observances were continuing with the participation of a large gathering of devotees.

During the special Pooja, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army respectfully presented the Army flag for blessings to the chief priest (Kurukkal) in accordance with Hindu rites and rituals. The whole ceremony was performed by a ten-member team of Hindu priests.

In symbolic recognition of the temple’s long service to the Hindu community and the Army, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya before his exit from the premises, made a monetary donation of Rs 25,000/= towards the Kovil Development Fund.  

This special ceremony of Hindu religious rites and rituals, performed by a team of ten senior priests, was coordinated by the Army Hindu Association, in consultation with the Chief Priest, Rev Suresh at this ancient temple.         

Senior officers, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Hindu Association and a representative gathering of all regiments and formations attended the special Pooja.

On Monday (1), the Army commenced its annual preceding religious ceremonies in connection with the forthcoming 63rd Army Anniversary and Army Day at Anuradhapura Jayasrimaha Bodhi precincts.
