Gurunagar Civilians Back to Their 97 Homes as Security Restrictions Removed

More than 14 years of absence, inhabitants in 97 houses dotted between Gurunagar and Ceynor Jetty in Jaffna were to return to their original homes after Security Forces, Jaffna, removing all security restrictions in place handed them over to their lawful heirs during a brief ceremony.

Facilitation of the resettlement of those families in their own houses became possible and speedy after the Security Forces opened the New Beach Road along Gurunagar beach patch for public use.

In line with the directions given by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to the Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters over the need to release private lands on a priority basis, re-location of these people in their original places of residence would help solve many issues, related to their livelihoods, transport, education, etc due to easy access to major places in the peninsula.

The ceremonial occasion was attended by Minister of Traditional Industries & Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda who unveiled the signboard for the road on the invitation of the Security Forces Commander Jaffna Major General M. Hathurusinghe. The occasion was also witnessed by Governor for Northern Province Major General G.A. Chandrasiri (Retd), Jaffna District Secretary Mrs. Imelda Sugumar, Jaffna Mayor Mrs. Yogeshwari Pathgunaraja, senior Army and Police officers and members of the public.

This area was previously held by the Security Forces to prevent any possible LTTE infiltration into the Jaffna City and also to ensure terrorists did not launch attacks on to the Jaffna center.
